ACULAR EYE DROPS (KETOROLAC TROMETHAMINE 0.5%)

What the Product Is

Acular is a sterile topical Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID) for ophthalmic use. Unlike steroid eye drops, Acular works by inhibiting the cyclo-oxygenase enzyme system, which blocks the production of prostaglandins—the chemical messengers responsible for pain, heat, and swelling in the eye.

What it Treats

Acular is a targeted treatment for pain and inflammation of the ocular surface. It is used for:

  • Post-Operative Inflammation: Specifically used after cataract surgery to reduce swelling and discomfort.

  • Seasonal Allergic Conjunctivitis: Relief of ocular itching and redness associated with hay fever or other seasonal allergies.

  • Cystoid Macular Edema (CME): Sometimes used "off-label" to treat or prevent swelling in the central part of the retina after eye surgery.

  • Refractive Surgery: Managing pain and light sensitivity (photophobia) following procedures like LASIK or PRK.

Key Active Ingredient

  • Ketorolac Tromethamine (5mg/ml): A potent NSAID that provides rapid localized relief from inflammation without the side effects typically associated with ocular steroids (such as increased eye pressure).

Dosage and Administration

  • For Allergies: Usually one (1) drop four times a day for relief of itchy eyes.

  • Post-Cataract Surgery: Typically starting 24 hours after surgery and continuing for 2 weeks, applied one (1) drop four times daily.

  • Note: Your ophthalmologist will provide a specific schedule based on your surgical recovery or the severity of your allergy.

How to Use

  1. Preparation: Wash your hands thoroughly.

  2. Application: Tilt your head back, pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket, and squeeze one drop into the eye.

  3. Pressure: Close your eye and press gently on the tear duct (the corner of the eye near the nose) for 1 minute. This keeps the medicine in the eye and prevents it from draining into the throat.

  4. Avoid Contamination: Do not let the dropper tip touch your eye, eyelashes, or any other surface.

  5. Spacing: If you are using other eye drops, wait at least 5 to 10 minutes before applying the next medication.

Important Precautions

  • Contact Lenses: Do not wear contact lenses while your eyes are red or during the treatment period. The preservative in Acular (benzalkonium chloride) can be absorbed by soft lenses and may cause irritation.

  • Bleeding Risk: Use with caution if you have known bleeding tendencies or are on blood thinners, as topical NSAIDs may increase the risk of ocular tissue bleeding during surgery.

  • Delayed Healing: Like all topical NSAIDs, Acular may slow the healing process of the cornea.

  • Aspirin Sensitivity: Use with caution if you have a known allergy to Aspirin or other NSAIDs, as cross-sensitivity can occur.

  • Storage: Store at room temperature ($15°C$ to $25°C$). Discard the bottle 4 weeks after opening to prevent bacterial contamination.

Who it's Suitable For

  • Indicated For: Patients recovering from ocular surgery or those suffering from intense allergic itching who require an alternative to steroid-based eye drops.

FAQ

Q: Does Acular sting?

A: A brief stinging or burning sensation for 1–2 minutes after application is a very common side effect and is usually not a cause for concern.

Q: Is Acular an antibiotic?

A: No. It does not treat infections. It is strictly for pain and inflammation. If you have an eye infection, you will need a separate antibiotic drop.

Q: Can I use this for "dry eye"?

A: No. Acular is not a lubricant. Using it for dry eyes without a doctor's recommendation may cause further irritation.
