Standard Route: Intramuscular (IM) injection into the deltoid muscle (upper arm). For small children, the anterolateral thigh is used. It must never be injected into the gluteal (buttock) region.
PEP Schedule (Essen Regimen): Usually a 5-dose course given on Days 0, 3, 7, 14, and 28. (Day 0 is the day of the first injection).
Combined Treatment: In cases of severe (Category III) bites, Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG) must be administered alongside the first dose of the vaccine for immediate protection.
Immediate Action: If bitten, wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes before heading to the pharmacy or clinic for the vaccine.
Reconstitution: The freeze-dried powder must be dissolved with the provided diluent and used immediately.
No Delays: Rabies is 100% fatal once symptoms appear, but 100% preventable if the vaccine schedule is started immediately and followed strictly.
Indicated For: Infants, children, and adults.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Because rabies is a fatal disease, there are no contraindications for the vaccine. It is safe and mandatory for pregnant or lactating women if they have been exposed.
Precautions: If you have a severe febrile illness, the vaccine may be delayed for PrEP, but never for Post-Exposure treatment.
Q: Can I skip a dose if the dog seems healthy?
A: No. You must complete the full course regardless of the animal's appearance unless a veterinarian officially clears the animal after a 10-day observation period.
Q: Are there side effects?
A: Most people experience only mild redness or swelling at the injection site. Occasionally, a mild fever or headache may occur, which can be managed with paracetamol.
Q: Does it matter where I was bitten?
A: Bites closer to the head and neck are higher risk as the virus has a shorter distance to travel to the brain. Seek medical attention even faster for these cases.
