Digoxin is a cardiac glycoside that works by inhibiting the sodium-potassium adenosine triphosphatase ($Na^+/K^+$ ATPase) pump within myocardial cell membranes. Maintenance Dosing: The standard adult maintenance dose ranges from 62.5 mcg (0.0625 mg) to 250 mcg (0.25 mg) taken once daily. The 62.5mcg strength is specifically utilized for low-weight individuals, elderly patients, or those with mild renal impairment.
💡 Take Digoxin at the exact same time every day. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. You can take it with or without food, but avoid high-fiber meals at the same time, as fiber can bind to the drug and lower its systemic absorption.

Common side effects include mild nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, or a slow heart rate (bradycardia). Signs of Digoxin Toxicity include severe loss of appetite, persistent diarrhea, visual disturbances (such as blurred vision, seeing yellow-green halos, or blind spots), extreme confusion, or an irregular pulse.
Why do I need routine blood tests while taking Digoxin?
Because of its narrow therapeutic window, your physician will schedule routine blood tests to measure the exact concentration of digoxin in your serum. Your doctor will also monitor your kidney function and blood electrolyte levels (especially potassium). Low potassium levels (hypokalemia) significantly increase your risk of developing life-threatening digoxin toxicity.
What should I do if I accidentally miss a daily dose?
If you remember within 12 hours of your scheduled time, take the missed tablet immediately. If more than 12 hours have passed, skip the missed dose entirely and resume your regular schedule the next day. Never take a double dose to compensate for a missed one. If you miss doses for two or more consecutive days, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Can I take over-the-counter antacids or diarrhea medications alongside Digoxin?
No. Antacids, cholesterol-lowering drugs (like cholestyramine), and certain anti-diarrheal mixtures containing kaolin-pectin can significantly reduce your body's ability to absorb digoxin. Always space these medications out from your Digoxin tablet by at least 2 hours, and clear all new supplements with our pharmacist.
