DIGOXIN 62.5MCG TABLETS — CARDIAC GLYCOSIDE THERAPY

TARGETED INOTROPIC MEDICATION CONFIGURED FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF CHRONIC HEART FAILURE AND THE CONTROL OF VENTRICULAR RATE IN ATRIAL FIBRILLATION. DISCREETLY DELIVERED ACROSS NIGERIA AND WORLDWIDE.

What It Does

Digoxin is a cardiac glycoside that works by inhibiting the sodium-potassium adenosine triphosphatase ($Na^+/K^+$ ATPase) pump within myocardial cell membranes. This inhibition leads to an increase in intracellular sodium, which subsequently drives up intracellular calcium levels via the sodium-calcium exchanger.

The increased availability of calcium ions inside the muscle fibers results in a stronger force of myocardial contraction (positive inotropy). Concurrently, digoxin stimulates vagal nerve activity, slowing the electrical conduction through the atrioventricular (AV) node to decrease the overall heart rate (negative chronotropy).

What It Treats

  • Chronic Heart Failure: Enhancing myocardial contractility to improve cardiac output and relieve symptoms like shortness of breath and fluid retention, typically alongside ACE inhibitors and diuretics.

  • Atrial Fibrillation and Atrial Flutter: Slowing a dangerously rapid ventricular response rate to help stabilize the heart's pumping rhythm.

Who It's For

  • Adults and Specialized Pediatric Patients requiring highly calibrated maintenance therapy to manage chronic cardiac failure or arrhythmias.

  • Not suitable for patients diagnosed with ventricular fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, second- or third-degree AV block (without a functioning pacemaker), or hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy.

Dosage

  • Maintenance Dosing: The standard adult maintenance dose ranges from 62.5 mcg (0.0625 mg) to 250 mcg (0.25 mg) taken once daily. The 62.5mcg strength is specifically utilized for low-weight individuals, elderly patients, or those with mild renal impairment.

💡 Take Digoxin at the exact same time every day. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. You can take it with or without food, but avoid high-fiber meals at the same time, as fiber can bind to the drug and lower its systemic absorption.

Key Ingredient

  • Digoxin (62.5 micrograms): A highly potent, purified cardiac glycoside extracted from the leaves of the foxglove plant (Digitalis lanata).

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects include mild nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, or a slow heart rate (bradycardia). WARNING: Digoxin has a narrow therapeutic window, meaning safe doses are very close to toxic doses. Signs of Digoxin Toxicity include severe loss of appetite, persistent diarrhea, visual disturbances (such as blurred vision, seeing yellow-green halos, or blind spots), extreme confusion, or an irregular pulse.

FAQs

Why do I need routine blood tests while taking Digoxin?

Because of its narrow therapeutic window, your physician will schedule routine blood tests to measure the exact concentration of digoxin in your serum. Your doctor will also monitor your kidney function and blood electrolyte levels (especially potassium). Low potassium levels (hypokalemia) significantly increase your risk of developing life-threatening digoxin toxicity.

What should I do if I accidentally miss a daily dose?

If you remember within 12 hours of your scheduled time, take the missed tablet immediately. If more than 12 hours have passed, skip the missed dose entirely and resume your regular schedule the next day. Never take a double dose to compensate for a missed one. If you miss doses for two or more consecutive days, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Can I take over-the-counter antacids or diarrhea medications alongside Digoxin?

No. Antacids, cholesterol-lowering drugs (like cholestyramine), and certain anti-diarrheal mixtures containing kaolin-pectin can significantly reduce your body's ability to absorb digoxin. Always space these medications out from your Digoxin tablet by at least 2 hours, and clear all new supplements with our pharmacist.
