IMODIUM is an over-the-counter and prescription anti-diarrheal medication. Each capsule/tablet contains 2mg of Loperamide Hydrochloride.
It is indicated for the symptomatic control and relief of acute (sudden) diarrhea and acute episodes associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). It is also used under medical supervision for managing chronic diarrhea caused by inflammatory bowel disease.
IMODIUM acts directly on the circular and longitudinal muscles of the intestinal wall:
Slows Gut Motility: It slows down bowel contractions and peristalsis, allowing food and fluids to pass more slowly through the digestive tract.
Improves Stool Consistency: Increased transit time gives the intestines more opportunity to reabsorb excess water and electrolytes, restoring firmer stool consistency and reducing bowel frequency.
Toxin Retention Alert: Do not use IMODIUM if you have high fever, bloody or tarry stools, or diarrhea caused by bacterial infection (Salmonella, Shigella) or broad-spectrum antibiotic use (C. difficile). Stopping bowel movements during an active infection can trap harmful toxins inside the gut.
Duration Caution: Self-treatment of acute diarrhea with IMODIUM should not exceed 48 hours. If symptoms do not improve after 2 days, stop taking it and consult a physician.
Heart Warning: Exceeding the recommended dosage can cause severe heart rhythm disorders, irregular heartbeats, and life-threatening cardiac events. Never exceed the daily maximum dose.
Recommended Dosage for Adults and Children Aged 12 Years & Older (Acute Diarrhea):
Starting Dose: Take 2 capsules/tablets (4mg) immediately after the first loose stool.
Subsequent Doses: Take 1 capsule/tablet (2mg) after each subsequent loose bowel movement.
Maximum Daily Dose: Do not exceed 6 capsules (12mg) per day for OTC use (or up to 8 capsules/16mg if specifically prescribed by a doctor).
Age Restrictions:
Do not give OTC IMODIUM to children under 12 years of age unless explicitly directed by a doctor.
How to Take:
Swallow capsules or tablets whole with water.
Drink plenty of fluids (such as oral rehydration salts or water) to replace lost fluids and prevent dehydration.
IMODIUM is generally well-tolerated when taken as directed. Common or mild side effects can include:
Constipation, flatulence, or mild abdominal cramps.
Nausea or mild indigestion.
Dizziness, drowsiness, or headache.
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C.
Keep tablets/capsules sealed inside their original blister packaging to protect from moisture.
Keep strictly out of reach of children.
No. IMODIUM treats the symptoms by slowing down bowel movements, but it does not treat underlying viral, bacterial, or dietary causes. Fluid and electrolyte replacement remains essential.
