Camosunate Infant is a specifically formulated Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT) designed for the treatment of malaria in the youngest patients. It combines Artesunate and Amodiaquine in a strength and dosage form suitable for infants. Because malaria can progress very rapidly in children under one year old, this medication is designed to act quickly to clear the parasite and prevent severe complications.
This product is primarily indicated for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated malaria in infants. It is used for:
Rapid Parasite Clearance: Quickly killing the Plasmodium falciparum parasites in the baby's blood.
Fever Reduction: Helping to lower the high body temperature often seen in infant malaria.
Prevention of Progression: Stopping the infection from turning into severe or cerebral malaria.
Artesunate (Infant Strength): A fast-acting component that begins destroying parasites immediately.
Amodiaquine (Infant Strength): Provides a sustained antimalarial effect to ensure the infection does not return after the 3-day course.
Standard Course: A 3-day treatment plan.
Dose for Infants: Usually one sachet or pediatric tablet (depending on the specific pack) taken once daily for 3 days.
Strict Completion: You must give the baby all 3 doses. Even if the fever goes away after the first day, the malaria is not fully cured until the course is finished.
Preparation: For infant sachets or dispersible tablets, dissolve the medication in a small amount of clean water or breast milk.
Administration: Gently give the solution to the baby using a clean medicine spoon or dropper.
Vomiting: If the baby vomits within 30 minutes of taking the medicine, you must repeat the dose. If vomiting happens frequently, take the baby to a hospital immediately for injectable treatment.
Feeding: It is helpful to give the medication after a small feed to help protect the baby's stomach.
Urgent Care: If the baby is unable to drink, is excessively drowsy, has fits (convulsions), or has very yellow eyes, do not wait—go to the hospital emergency room immediately.
Weight Check: Dosage in infants is very sensitive. Ensure the baby's weight matches the "Infant" category on the pack (usually for babies between 5kg and 8kg).
Not for Prevention: This is a treatment for when the baby is already sick; it is not a daily preventive medicine.
Indicated For: Infants aged 1 month to 11 months.
Note: For newborns under 1 month old, malaria treatment should only be administered under the direct supervision of a pediatrician in a hospital setting.
Q: Can I mix it with the baby's pap or food?
A: It is best to mix it with a small amount of water or breast milk to ensure the baby swallows the entire dose. Mixing it with a large bowl of pap might result in the baby not finishing the medication.
Q: Will it make my baby sleepy?
A: Some infants may appear tired; this is usually due to the malaria infection itself. However, if the baby is "floppy" or very difficult to wake up, seek medical help immediately.
Q: Can I give Paracetamol too?
A: Yes. You can give pediatric Paracetamol drops alongside Camosunate to help keep the baby's fever down while the antimalarial works.
