Bricanyl Turbohaler is a "Reliever" inhaler containing Terbutaline Sulfate. It belongs to a group of medicines called Short-Acting Beta-Agonists (SABAs). This device is a breath-actuated dry powder inhaler (DPI), meaning the medication is delivered to your lungs as a fine powder when you inhale through the mouthpiece.
Bricanyl is designed for the immediate relief of breathing difficulties. It is primarily used for:
Asthma: Quickly opening the airways during an asthma attack or when experiencing shortness of breath.
COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease): Relieving persistent breathlessness and wheezing.
Exercise-Induced Bronchospasm: Preventing chest tightness when taken 10–15 minutes before physical activity.
Bronchitis: Easing the tightness in the chest caused by inflammation of the bronchial tubes.
Terbutaline Sulfate (0.5mg per dose): A fast-acting bronchodilator that relaxes the smooth muscles in the airways, allowing them to open up within minutes.
For Acute Relief: Usually one (1) inhalation as needed when symptoms occur.
Persistent Symptoms: If symptoms are severe, a second inhalation may be taken after 5 minutes.
Maximum Dose: You should not typically need more than four (4) inhalations in a 24-hour period. If you find you need your reliever more than three times a week, consult our pharmacist, as your "preventer" treatment may need adjustment.
Unscrew: Remove the white cover.
Load: Hold the inhaler upright. Turn the colored base as far as it will go in one direction, then turn it back until you hear a "CLICK." The dose is now loaded.
Exhale: Breathe out gently, away from the inhaler. Never breathe into the Turbohaler.
Inhale: Place the mouthpiece between your teeth and close your lips. Inhale deeply and forcefully through the device.
Hold: Remove the inhaler and hold your breath for about 5–10 seconds.
Clean: Wipe the mouthpiece with a dry tissue. Do not use water.
The "Reliever" Status: Bricanyl treats symptoms but does not treat the underlying inflammation. If you are using this inhaler frequently, it is a sign that your asthma is not well-controlled.
Heart Rate: You may feel your heart beating faster (palpitations) or experience slight tremors in your hands shortly after use. This is common and usually passes quickly.
Potassium Levels: High doses of Terbutaline can lower blood potassium levels. If you are on other medications like diuretics, your doctor may monitor this.
Pregnancy/Nursing: Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy if required to control asthma, but always inform your healthcare provider.
Indicated For: Adults and children who can perform a forceful inhalation. It is ideal for those who prefer a dry powder system over a traditional aerosol (puffer) spray.
Q: How do I know when the inhaler is empty?
A: There is a dose indicator window on the side of the device. When you see red marks, there are about 20 doses left. When the "0" reaches the middle of the window, the inhaler is empty.
Q: Why don't I feel anything when I inhale?
A: Because it is a very fine powder, you may not taste or feel the dose entering your lungs. As long as you heard the "click" and inhaled forcefully, the medicine has been delivered.
Q: Can I use this for a sudden severe allergic reaction?
A: No. Bricanyl is for respiratory symptoms only. For severe systemic allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), an adrenaline auto-injector (EpiPen) is required.
