Microgynon 30 is a popular prescription daily contraceptive pill (often called "the Pill"). The 63-tablet box contains 3 blister strips (a 3-month supply). Each small pill contains two female hormones: 150 micrograms of Levonorgestrel and 30 micrograms of Ethinylestradiol.
When taken correctly, it is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. It is also frequently prescribed to help make periods lighter, less painful, and more regular.
Microgynon 30 works by combining two synthetic hormones to prevent pregnancy in three main ways:
Stops Egg Release: It prevents your ovaries from releasing an egg (ovulation) each month.
Blocks Sperm: It thickens the fluid (mucus) at the entrance of the womb, making it difficult for sperm to swim through.
Prevents Attachment: It thins the lining of the womb so a fertilized egg cannot attach and grow.
🚨 Medical Caution: Taking combined pills slightly increases the risk of developing a blood clot in your veins or arteries compared to not taking them.
Seek medical help right away if you notice signs of a clot, such as painful swelling in one leg, sudden chest pain, or sudden shortness of breath.
🚨 Health Warning: Women over 35 years old who smoke have a much higher risk of heart problems or strokes while on this pill. Your doctor may suggest a different type of birth control.
🚨 Protection Notice: Microgynon 30 protects against pregnancy, but it does NOT protect against Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) like HIV or chlamydia. Use condoms for STI protection.
Take 1 Pill Daily for 21 Days: Take one pill at the same time every day following the direction of the arrows printed on the strip until all 21 pills are finished.
Take a 7-Day Break: After finishing a 21-pill strip, do not take any pills for 7 days. During these 7 days, you will usually have a light bleeding similar to a period (withdrawal bleed).
Start the Next Pack: Start your next 21-day strip on the 8th day, even if you are still bleeding.
If less than 12 hours late: Take the missed pill right away and take your next pill at your usual time (even if it means taking 2 pills in one day). You are still protected against pregnancy.
If more than 12 hours late (or missed multiple pills): Take the last missed pill right away, leave any earlier missed pills, and continue taking your pills daily. Your protection may be reduced. Use an extra condom for the next 7 days and check the instruction leaflet for specific advice depending on which week of the pack you missed.
Mild nausea or stomach discomfort.
Mild headaches or mood changes.
Tender or swollen breasts.
Spotting or light bleeding between periods during the first few months.
Severe chest pain, sudden coughing up of blood, or shortness of breath.
Unusual, painful swelling or redness in one of your legs.
Severe, unusual headaches or vision changes.
Yellowing of your skin or eyes (jaundice).
Keep tablets inside their original blister packaging and outer box.
Store in a cool, dry place away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight.
