Microgynon ED is an everyday prescription contraceptive pill (the Pill). The 84-tablet box contains 3 blister packs (a 3-month supply). Each 28-day pack contains 21 active yellow pills and 7 inactive white placebo pills.
When taken correctly, it is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. It is also prescribed to make periods lighter, less painful, and more regular.
Microgynon ED uses two female hormones (Levonorgestrel and Ethinylestradiol) in the active pills to prevent pregnancy in three simple ways:
Stops Egg Release: It prevents your body from releasing an egg each month.
Blocks Sperm: It thickens the natural fluid at the entrance of the womb, making it hard for sperm to swim through.
Prevents Attachment: It thins the lining of the womb so a fertilized egg cannot settle and grow.
🚨 Medical Caution: Taking combined birth control pills slightly increases the risk of blood clots in your veins or arteries.
Seek medical help right away if you experience painful swelling in one leg, sudden chest pain, or sudden shortness of breath.
🚨 Health Warning: Women over 35 years old who smoke have a higher risk of heart and blood pressure problems on this pill. Your doctor may suggest a different contraceptive option.
🚨 Protection Notice: Microgynon ED prevents pregnancy, but it does NOT protect against Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). Use condoms for STI protection.
Take 1 Pill Daily Without Stopping: Take one pill at the same time every day, following the arrows on the pack.
21 Active Pills + 7 Inactive Pills:
Take the 21 active yellow pills first (one each day for 3 weeks).
Take the 7 inactive white pills next (one each day for 1 week). You will usually have bleeding similar to a period during this week.
No Pill-Free Gap: As soon as you finish the 7 white pills, start a new pack the very next day without taking a break.
If you miss a white inactive pill: Throw it away and take your next pill on time. Your pregnancy protection is not affected.
If you miss a yellow active pill (less than 12 hours late): Take it as soon as you remember, then take your next pill at your usual time. You are still protected.
If you miss a yellow active pill (more than 12 hours late): Take the last missed pill right away, even if it means taking 2 pills at once. Use an extra condom for the next 7 days and check the instruction leaflet for guidance based on which week of the pack you missed.
Mild nausea or stomach discomfort.
Mild headaches or slight mood changes.
Tender or swollen breasts.
Light spotting or bleeding between periods during the first few months.
Severe chest pain, sudden cough, or shortness of breath.
Unusual swelling, redness, or pain in one leg.
Severe, unusual headaches or vision changes.
Yellowing of your skin or eyes (jaundice).
Keep tablets inside their original blister pack and box.
Store in a cool, dry place away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight.
