Rituximab 500mg/50ml is a specialized, prescription-only targeted biological therapy (a chimeric monoclonal antibody). It is supplied as a single-use vial containing 500mg of Rituximab in 50ml of liquid concentrate (10mg/ml) for intravenous infusion.
It is prescribed by oncologists, hematologists, and rheumatologists to treat conditions including:
Blood Cancers: Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL) and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL).
Autoimmune & Inflammatory Conditions: Severe Rheumatoid Arthritis, Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (GPA), Microscopic Polyangiitis (MPA), and Pemphigus Vulgaris.
Rituximab targets and destroys specific immune cells involved in disease progression:
Targets B-Cells: Rituximab specifically attaches to a protein called CD20 found on the surface of B-lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell).
Clears Harmful Cells: Once bound, it triggers the body’s immune system to destroy these B-cells. This helps halt cancerous B-cell growth or stops autoimmune destruction of healthy tissue.
🚨 Hospital Use Only: Rituximab is NEVER for self-injection at home. It must be diluted and given as a slow intravenous (IV) drip in a hospital or specialized clinic setting under direct medical supervision.
🚨 Severe Infusion Warning: Severe and potentially life-threatening reactions can occur during or within 24 hours of the infusion (such as severe rash, swelling, chest tightness, or difficulty breathing).
Pre-medications (e.g., paracetamol, antihistamines, and corticosteroids) are administered prior to each dose to minimize this risk.
🚨 Viral Warning: Rituximab can reactivate latent Hepatitis B virus infections, which can lead to severe liver failure. Screening for Hepatitis B is mandatory before starting treatment.
🚨 Immune Suppression: Because Rituximab lowers B-cell counts, it reduces your body's ability to fight infections. Report any fever, chills, or signs of infection to your doctor immediately.
Route: Intravenous (IV) infusion into a vein after dilution.
Pre-medication: Patients receive pre-medications approximately 30 to 60 minutes before each infusion.
Infusion Speed: The initial infusion starts slowly over several hours to monitor for side effects. If well-tolerated, subsequent infusions may be given at a faster rate.
Infusion-related mild reactions: mild fever, chills, shivering, or itching.
Nausea, fatigue, or headache.
Mild upper respiratory tract infections or sore throat.
Mild changes in blood pressure during infusion.
Shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, or throat swelling.
Severe skin reactions (blistering, peeling, or painful sores).
Signs of a serious infection (persistent high fever, severe weakness).
Confusion, memory loss, or difficulty walking/speaking (unusual neurological symptoms).
Store in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C. Do NOT freeze.
Keep the vial in its original outer carton to protect it from direct light.
Must be maintained strictly under temperature-controlled cold-chain conditions.
