Symbicort 200/6 Turbohaler is a combination "preventer and reliever" inhaler. It is a dry powder inhaler (DPI) that delivers two different medications into the lungs simultaneously. Unlike basic inhalers that only offer short-term relief, Symbicort addresses both the immediate symptoms and the underlying inflammation that causes respiratory distress.
Symbicort is primarily indicated for the management of Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). It is used to:
Prevent Asthma Attacks: Reduces the swelling and irritation in the airways to prevent symptoms before they start.
Provide Rapid Relief: The long-acting bronchodilator in Symbicort actually starts working within 1 to 3 minutes, similar to a "rescue" inhaler.
Manage COPD: Helps patients with chronic bronchitis or emphysema maintain better lung function and reduce daily breathlessness.
Reduce Airway Sensitivity: Helps the lungs become less reactive to triggers like dust, cold air, or exercise.
The dose is highly individualized. Common patterns include:
Maintenance Therapy: Usually 1 to 2 inhalations twice daily (morning and evening).
SMART/MART Therapy: For some asthma patients, the doctor may prescribe Symbicort to be used for both daily maintenance and as a reliever whenever symptoms occur.
Note: Always use this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not exceed the maximum number of inhalations recommended in a 24-hour period.
Since this is a dry powder inhaler, your "breath power" delivers the medicine. Follow these steps:
Unscrew: Remove the white cover.
Load: Hold the inhaler upright. Twist the colored base as far as it will go in one direction and then back again until you hear a "click." The dose is now loaded.
Exhale: Breathe out gently (away from the inhaler).
Inhale: Place the mouthpiece between your teeth, seal your lips, and breathe in deeply and forcefully.
Hold: Remove the inhaler and hold your breath for 5–10 seconds.
Rinse: CRITICAL: Always rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after use. This prevents oral thrush (a fungal infection) and hoarseness.
Each delivered dose contains:
Budesonide (200mcg): A corticosteroid that treats the "fire" (inflammation) inside the airways.
Formoterol Fumarate Dihydrate (6mcg): A long-acting beta-agonist (LABA) that keeps the airway muscles relaxed for up to 12 hours.
Indicated For: Adults and adolescents (12 years and older).
Precautions: Not suitable for those with a severe allergy to lactose or milk proteins (as the inhaler contains a small amount of lactose).

Q: I didn't taste anything or feel the powder. Did I get the dose?

Q: Do I still need my blue Ventolin inhaler?
A: This depends on your doctor's specific plan. If you are on "Maintenance and Reliever Therapy" (SMART), Symbicort replaces your blue inhaler. If you are on "Maintenance only," you still need your blue inhaler for emergencies.
Q: Can I use this if I am pregnant?
