ORAL ANTI-HYPERGLYCEMIC THERAPY FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS. NAFDAC-REGISTERED. DISCREETLY DELIVERED ACROSS NIGERIA AND WORLDWIDE.
Zolital contains Pioglitazone, an oral diabetes medication belonging to the thiazolidinedione class. It operates as an insulin sensitizer by activating specific receptors in the body (PPAR-gamma) that regulate glucose and lipid metabolism. Instead of forcing the pancreas to produce more insulin, Zolital helps muscle, fat, and liver cells utilize the insulin your body already produces much more effectively, significantly reducing insulin resistance.
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Improving glycemic control as an adjunct to diet and exercise, either as monotherapy or in combination with other anti-diabetic medications (like Metformin or Sulfonylureas).
Insulin Resistance: Enhancing tissue sensitivity to circulating insulin to naturally bring down fasting and post-meal blood sugar levels.
✅ Adults with Type 2 Diabetes whose blood sugar levels are inadequately managed by lifestyle modifications alone or who are intolerant to Metformin.
✅ Overweight Patients where insulin resistance is a major driver of elevated HbA1c levels.
❌ Not suitable for patients with Type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, active bladder cancer, uninvestigated blood in the urine (macroscopic hematuria), severe liver impairment, or a history of congestive heart failure (NYHA Class I to IV).
Initial Dose: Usually 15mg or 30mg taken once daily, with or without food.
Dose Adjustment: Your physician may gradually increase the dose in 15mg increments based on clinical response and HbA1c tests.
Maximum Dose: The total daily intake should not exceed 45mg once daily.
💡 Take your tablet at around the same time every single day. If you are taking it alongside insulin or other blood-sugar-lowering drugs, monitor closely for symptoms of hypoglycemia.
Pioglitazone Hydrochloride (available in 15mg and 30mg strengths): A potent, targeted agonist for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma that reduces hepatic glucose production and increases peripheral glucose uptake.
Common side effects include mild weight gain (due to fat distribution or fluid retention), upper respiratory tract infections, headache, or muscle aches. WARNING: Pioglitazone can cause fluid retention, which may precipitate or worsen congestive heart failure. Report any sudden shortness of breath, rapid weight gain, localized swelling (edema) in the ankles or feet, or discolored/bloody urine to a doctor immediately.
Will Zolital cause my blood sugar to drop too low (hypoglycemia)?
When taken on its own (as monotherapy), Zolital has a low risk of causing low blood sugar. However, if you are taking it in combination with insulin or a sulfonylurea, the risk increases, and your doctor may need to lower your other medication doses.
How long does it take to see a drop in blood sugar?
Because it works by changing gene expression related to insulin receptors, its action is gradual. A noticeable reduction in blood glucose usually takes 1 to 2 weeks, while the full therapeutic effect on your HbA1c may take up to 2 to 3 months of consistent use.
Does this medication affect liver function?
Your doctor will check your liver enzymes before you start taking Zolital. While routine monitoring is not required for everyone, you should contact a doctor immediately if you experience unexplained nausea, abdominal pain, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin/eyes.
