Intuniv 2mg is a prescription-only non-stimulant neurobehavioral medication. Each pack contains 28 prolonged-release (PR) tablets, each formulated with 2mg of Guanfacine (as Guanfacine Hydrochloride).
Prescribed by specialists, it is primarily indicated for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years for whom stimulants are unsuitable, not tolerated, or ineffective. It is used either as a monotherapy or as an adjunctive treatment alongside stimulant therapy.
Guanfacine is a selective $\alpha_{2A}$-adrenergic receptor agonist:
Prefrontal Cortex Modulation: Binds selectively to $\alpha_{2A}$-adrenergic receptors in the prefrontal cortex of the brain, strengthening neural networks responsible for executive function.
Improves Impulse Control: Helps regulate attention, reduce hyperactive behavior, inhibit distractibility, and improve behavioral self-regulation.
Central Sympatholytic Action: Reduces central sympathetic nervous system outflow, which leads to calm behavioral regulation as well as mild blood pressure and heart rate lowering effects.
🚨 Critical Medical Warning: Do NOT stop taking Intuniv suddenly.
Abruptly discontinuing guanfacine can trigger a rapid spike in blood pressure and heart rate (rebound hypertension).
Dose reduction or discontinuation must always be done gradually under direct physician supervision (tapering down by no more than 1mg every 3 to 7 days).
🚨 Cardiovascular Caution: Intuniv causes decreases in blood pressure (hypotension) and heart rate (bradycardia).
Your prescribing doctor will check baseline blood pressure and pulse before starting treatment and monitor them regularly during therapy.
🚨 Drowsiness Notice: Intuniv commonly causes significant drowsiness, somnolence, and fatigue, especially during the first few weeks of treatment or following dose increases.
Avoid operating machinery, driving, or engaging in hazardous tasks until the individual's response to the medication is fully known.
Swallow Whole: Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water or liquid.
Do NOT Crush or Chew: Do NOT crush, chew, or break prolonged-release tablets. Crushing destroys the extended-release matrix, causing a dangerous release of the full dose at once.
Food Requirement: Take once daily (morning or evening) with or without food. Avoid taking Intuniv with high-fat meals, as high fat significantly increases drug exposure.
Avoid Grapefruit: Do not consume grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking Intuniv, as it alters liver metabolism of guanfacine.
If 1 dose is missed, take the next dose at the regular time the following day.
If 2 or more consecutive doses are missed, contact your doctor before resuming. Re-titration (re-starting at a lower dose) may be necessary to avoid rapid blood pressure spikes or side effects.
Drowsiness, fatigue, or daytime sedation.
Headaches.
Abdominal pain or upper stomach discomfort.
Low blood pressure (hypotension) and slow heart rate (bradycardia).
Lightheadedness or dizziness when standing up quickly.
Dry mouth, constipation, or nausea.
Irritability or mild weight gain.
Is Intuniv a controlled stimulant like methylphenidate or amphetamine?
No. Intuniv is a non-stimulant medication. It has no potential for abuse or physical addiction and works on a completely different brain pathway ($\alpha_{2A}$-adrenergic receptors) than stimulant medications.
Can adults take Intuniv?
